Greece remained the third biggest exporter of olive oil in Japan in 2016, after Italy and Spain and ahead of Turkey (4th), a report by the Greek embassy in Tokyo revealed.
Italy and Spain represented 93.7 pct of olive oil imports in Japan in 2016 from 93.1 pct in 2015, with Italian exports totaling 92.3 million euros and Spanish exports totaling 91.2 million euros. Italian exports fell 13.8 pct in value while Spanish exports eased 16.2 pct compared with 2015.
Greek olive oil exports are almost exclusively virgin or extra virgin oil, while Turkish exports stand mosty for lower quality olive oil. Greek exports totaled 4.67 million euros in 2016, up from 5.84 million 2015 and 3.5 million in 2014, with a market share in Japan of 2.4 pct in 2016 (down from 2.7 pct in 2015 – the first decline after four years of improvement).
