The annual Greek Glendi in Australia’s Oakleigh returns this year on Saturday and Sunday, November 4-5, aiming to beat last year’s attendance of 20,000.
The annual Greek event does not only highlight Greek culture through music, dance and food, but it is also a celebration of the area’s cultural diversity.
The Greek Glendi will be held at Warawee Park, and like every year there will be lots of Greek and Cypriot delicacies, like dolmades, souvlaki and sheftalia.
And what better accompaniment to the succulent plates than music and dance drom the homeland, with traditional music and dance performances by the Cretan Brotherhood of Melbourne and Victoria, Akrites Tou Pontou, Glendi Band, OPA – School of Hellenic Dance, Polyxeni and Anagennisi on the Procal Dairies Main Stage.
One of the favorites, the loukoumades eating competition, will take place again this year, with competitors trying to eat 30 of those in less than 15 minutes.
Renowned chefs will share some of the secrets of the trade in cooking demonstrations and workshops. Philip Vakos from Bahari, The Hellenic Palate, Emelia Jackson, Zoe Konikkos and Nicolette Stathopoulo from Masterchef will present mouthwatering recipes.
The Glendi will also include a commemoration of OXI Day as well as the patron saints Anargiri, Kosmas and Damianos.
Young Greeks and other attendees will also be entertained with rides and other activities. Those who buy fundraising raffle tickets will have the opportunity to win two return flights to Greece, courtesy of Hello World Oakleigh, to the value of 4,000 dollars. Tickets can be purchased at the Glendi, and the winners will be announced on Sunday evening.
