US ambassador inaugurates FoodUSA forum at Thessaloniki International Fair

The United States supports the economic revival of Greece, US Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt stressed during brief remarks opening the 3rd Export Forum USA 2018 in Thessaloniki on Monday, according to ANA.

Speaking at the opening of the forum on “FoodUSA: Innovation & Disruption is ON”, Pyatt repeated that he will continue to support opportunities that promote the greek economy even further.

The forum is organized by the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) as well as the Chambers of Industries and Exporters of Northern Greece (SBBE and SEVE, respectively), at the Thessaloniki International Fair where the United States is the honored country.

US represented 6% of Greece’s global exports in the food & beverages sector in particular, with the majority of food exports being fruits and vegetables (51.7%), followed by fats and oils (14.1%), dairy (7.7%), fish (6.2%) and cereal-based foods (5.2%).

A recent National Bank report that highlighted the strength of the agricultural sector: of 18 products that comprised the core of exports and supported Greek economy during the crisis, 12 were related to this sector.

Among those 18 exported products, were canned peach, which is first in the world with a 20% share of the market globally, fresh fish (17%), and olives, which were exported to 88 countries. Olive exports rose by 110% between 2009 and 2017, and expanded their share in the global market from 19% in 2009 to 26% in 2017.
