The Varvakeios Agora is a block long on Athinas Street near Omonia Square and features meat, fish, and vegetables, beginning at 6 AM.
The fish market is under a double-pitched roof and is often considered as the most bustling place in the edifice and gets the most buyers and visitors. Some 100 professional fishmongers sell their wares from stalls, with about 400 workers scurrying about and making pitches to would-be customers
Every day, 5-10 tons of fish, sea food, and processed sea food are distributed, attracting 3000-5000 buyers who prefer to shop here rather than supermarkets. You can find sardines, crabs, eels, Atlantic mackerel, smelt, pickerel, bogue, cod, anchovies, red mullet, striped grey mullet, sprat, tuna, swordfish, sting rays, sole, monkfish, and grouper but have a keen eye because the fish hasn’t always been taken from the open sea as claimed. The wares come from Kavala in the north of Greece and waters off the islands of Kymi, Skyros, Naxos, Paros, Kalymnos and Symi mostly.
