Greece’s national team of professional butchers, dubbed “Meating Greece,” will compete in a competition called the “World Butcher’s Challenge 2020,” which will take place in Sacramento, California on September 5, 2020, according to greekreporter.com.
The World Butchers’ Challenge is an international competition in which butchers from around the world battle it out for the title of the world’s most proficient practitioner of the ancient art. The tournament is often referred to as the “Olympics of Meat.”
The Greek team, which includes talents from all over the nation, has already started training for the challenge. The head of the Greek team which will take part in the competition is butcher Leonidas Mathioulakis from Chania, a city on the Greek island of Crete.
The leaders from the sixteen countries participating in the competition will meet in Sacramento from September 24-28 of this year, to become acquainted with each other and provide guidance to the organizers as well as to grant interviews to the press.
“Having the vision of showing that Greece is a worthy competitor on the international stage in the art of butchery, and promoting our great national culinary tradition, the ‘Meating Greece’ group will participate, for the second consecutive time, in the next World Butchers’ Challenge,” noted Mathioulakis in a recently-released announcement.
“The goal is to promote the country, to feature new talents from all over Greece, to activate the expatriates, to welcome sponsorship, and once more to… aim at more worldwide awards,” he pointed out.
The previous global butchering competition took place in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 2018, where the Greek team took first place in the competition for the World’s Best Burger.
