Greek-American eateries turn to takeout due to coronavirus

It’s a sudden, stark, and sad reality that with restaurants around the world closing down to keep people from gathering in the fight against the dreaded COVID-19 Coronavirus workers are being laid off, revenues are plummeting, and owners have to rely on deliveries to maintain some cash flow, thenationalherald.com reports.

It has especially hit Greek-American restaurants in the United States, including George’s Greek Caf?, which has four spots in California, including in downtown Long Beach, as restaurant owners have to make tough choices to keep the business alive.

“All three of our salary managers, we’ve upped their hours because we can’t afford it for the hourly staff,” Jessi Smith, the caf? manager told The Long Beach Post of the plight.

“All three of us are working 60 to 70 hours a week, six days a week, 12 to 14 hours. But any tips that we receive are being distributed to our staff. We’re doing all that we can.”

For lovers of Greek food, it’s just not the same having a lamb dinner with all the fixings brought to your house as sitting with friends in a restaurant.
