Half the production of peaches and nectarines were destroyed by the “Thaleia” storm on Wednesday afternoon, the chief of the agricultural cooperative in Velvendo, Kozani area, Nikos Koutliabas said on Thursday, according to ANA.
The major fruit-supplying area in the valley from Velvendo to Servia in northern Greece lost 50% of the cultivations, he said, to the rain and hail storms.
“Of the 6,000 stremmas (600 ha) with peaches and nectarines that were hit by the storm – out of a total of 12,000 stremmas (1200 ha) in the area – the greater part is completely destroyed,” he noted, as a few producers had managed to collect the fruit while others lost the entire crop.
There are nearly 400 producers in the area, with an average annual production of 20 million kilograms of both fruit, and the average cost of production per stremma (0.1 ha) ranges around the 1,000-euro mark.
