Market checks for PDO halloumi compliance in Cyprus

Cyprus Ministry of Agriculture officials began on Monday widespread checks in supermarkets to ensure compliance with the specifications of halloumi as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product, following the expiry of the transition period for the disposal of old stocks, CNA reports.

Cypriot Minister of Agriculture Costas Kadis said recently that he will protect and promote Cyprus’ halloumi, a traditional cheese registered as a protected designation of origin. He described the product as Cyprus’ precious wealth that has lived on for generations.

Halloumi or haloumi (Greek: Χαλλούμι) is a semi-hard, unripened cheese made from a mixture of goat’s and sheep’s milk, and sometimes also cow’s milk.
