With the aim of promoting the centuries-old gastronomic tradition and the rich cultural heritage of Xanthi and the wider region, the action “Taste Xanthi – Taste Xanthi” is being organized tomorrow, Friday, May 30, by the Municipality of Xanthi, the Region of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, and local organizations.
The inauguration will be held by the president of the Greek National Tourist Organization, Angela Gerekou, as this specific initiative is under the auspices of the organization, in order to highlight the important role of gastronomy in the cultural promotion and sustainable tourism development of the region.
Taste Xanthi will take place in the city’s Municipal Market and will focus on kavourmas, a traditional product with deep roots in local culture that will form the basis for three dishes that will be cooked by Thracian chef Vangelis Driskas, in collaboration with culinary school students. In total, 1,500 portions will be prepared and offered to visitors, while an exhibition of products from local producers will also be held in the same space.
The organizers’ ambition is to make this event a dynamic annual institution, which will contribute both to the systematic promotion of the gastronomic wealth of the wider Thrace region to the Greek and international public, and to its inclusion on the map of the country’s gastronomic destinations.

A. Gerekou: “Inspiring initiative and a vibrant celebration of flavors”
On the occasion of her presence at Taste Xanthi, Ms. Gerekou described it in a statement as “an inspiring initiative and a vibrant celebration of flavors, colors and culture, starring the region’s top local products and the people who produce them with such hard work.” The president of the Greek National Tourism Organization noted that “the Xanthi table, but also the entire Thrace region, is a unique meeting point, a crossroads of cultures” and concluded by stating: “For the Greek National Tourism Organization and me personally, the organic coupling of the Hospitality Economy with culture, the primary sector and authentic local products is a necessary and indispensable condition for the creation of strong local destinations but above all for the sustainable development of local societies and their people.”
During her stay in Xanthi, the president of the Greek National Tourism Organization will also have contacts with representatives of local bodies and will be given a tour of points of interest in the wider area, while on Sunday, June 1, she will visit the archaeological site of Philippi, Kavala, and Thassos.
