MAICH | Policies for sustainable and rich agri-food and agro-biodiversity

The Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICH) is organizing on Monday, September 15, 2025, at the MAICH Conference Center (Thalis Hall) from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., an event entitled: “Cooking policies for sustainable and rich agri-food and agro-biodiversity – BioValue Project (Horizon 2020)”.

The event is taking place within the framework of the European BioValue/Horizon 2020 project, which aims to promote biodiversity in the agri-food sector, highlighting underutilized plant species and varieties and encouraging the development of innovative products and culinary creations.

The event aims to bring together policymakers, producers, agri-food sector representatives and catering professionals, strengthening the dialogue between politics, gastronomy and innovation.

During the event, the results of the BioValue project will be presented, as well as good practices and strategies for the promotion of underutilized plant species, as well as ideas for creative food choices. At the end, participants will enjoy unique culinary experiences, through the creations of renowned chefs, inspired by underutilized plant species.

The BioValue research project “Fork-to-farm agent-based simulation tool augmenting BIOdiversity in the agri-food VALUE chain – BIOVALUE” is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme.

The project proposes the introduction of underutilized varieties of cereals, legumes, leafy and fruit vegetables into the agri-food value chain as a means of addressing critical challenges related to agrobiodiversity, food security, nutrition and climate change.

BioValue, which started in 2021 and ends at the end of September 2025, is coordinated by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and is led by Professor Emeritus of the Department of Agriculture and visiting professor at MAICH, Mr. Konstantinos Mattas. The project involves 17 partners from 12 countries — including MAICH — including: Norway, Hungary, France, Cyprus, Spain, Estonia, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Georgia and Serbia.

The event is open to the public.
