Tourism arrivals to Cyprus rose by 40.6% in March 2016 compared to the same month last year.
“On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, arrivals of tourists reached 137,013 in March 2016 compared to 97,479 in March 2015, recording an increase of 40.6%,” the island’s Statistical Service (Cystat) said.
According to the data, on an annual basis, Cyprus saw a 44.1% rise in tourist arrivals from the UK – the island’s main feeder market – rising to 59,282 visitors last month compared to March 2015. This was followed by an impressive 73.5% jump in German tourists (up to 12,917 from 7,443 last year), 63.4% rise in visitors from Russia and Greek visitors up 15.5% in March on-the-year.
Cystat figures showed that tourist arrivals to Cyprus from France were lagging, down 19.8% in March to 1,616 arrivals from 2,016 in March 2015.
For the first three months of the year, tourist arrivals totalled 251,608 compared to 189,988 in the same quarter of 2015, recording a 32.4% increase.
Meanwhile, the number of Cypriot residents travelling abroad in March rose 4.6% on an annual basis.
According to the results of the Passengers Survey, 86.229 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad in March 2016 compared to 82.418 in the corresponding month last year. The data showed that Greece was the destination of choice for most travellers – recording a 7.4% rise in March to 31,570 in March from 29,387 in March 2015.
