German tour operators reported only a few cancellations and stressed that holidays are continuing normally in Turkish resorts despite the failed coup attempt in the country.
The situation in the Turkish holiday resorts remains calm after the attempted coup, according to tour operators including Thomas Cook, TUI and DER Touristik. Hotels are operating normally and excursions are taking place, they said at the start of this week.
Only a small number of holidaymakers decided to return home, while holidaymakers with flights to Turkey on Saturday and Sunday were given the option of free cancellations.
But only 15 out of 18,000 TUI customers currently in Turkey asked about returning home early, while only a handful of Thomas Cook’s 23,000 customers in the country made similar enquiries, according to media reports. However, about 600 of 2,000 guests due to fly with Alltours to the Turkish Riviera in the days immediately after the uprising reportedly cancelled their holiday.
The German foreign ministry has not issued a general travel warning for Turkey but is advising visitors to Istanbul and Ankara to take “extreme care”, especially in public places, and if necessary “not to leave apartments and hotels”.
