There was a 91% surge in bookings to Heraklion, the main airport on Crete, and a 65% rise in bookings to Rhodes, according to figures from reservations provider Traveltainment for German package holiday bookings to leading destination airports. However, these apparently very high figures have to be compared to the weak figures in October 2015, when Heraklion, for example, had an 11% fall in bookings.
In contrast, Antalya, the largest destination airport in volume terms, suffered a 26% slump in bookings in October and its market share (of all bookings for the top ten airports) fell from 32% in September to 24% last month.
Similarly, there was a 20% fall in bookings to Hurghada but the Egyptian airport remained in third place in the top ten ranking with a 13% share.
Elsewhere, Palma enjoyed a 6% rise in bookings, leaving it second to Antalya with a 22% share of all bookings for the ten largest destination airports last month.
There was mixed demand for the Canary Islands in October. Fuerteventura and Tenerife South each had a 2% rise in bookings but there was a 4% drop for Las Palmas and 7% for Arrecife.
One winner, however, was certainly Madeira, which already saw a strong 36% rise in bookings in September. The Portuguese island followed up with a 12% increase last month, maintaining its ninth position in the ranking of the ten largest destination airports for German package holiday bookings.
