German tourism: Demand for Greece dropped back in May

Demand for Greece in Germany dropped back during May while bookings to Hurghada doubled last month and clearly improved for the Canary Islands, according to new figures by Traveltainment published at fvw.com.

Greece bookings fell back after months of very strong growth. Heraklion on Crete had only a 6% rise following an 8% increase in April and strong rises of over 30% in the first three months of 2017. Similarly, Rhodes was down by 2% and Kos weakened by 8% in May.

In contrast, the main Egyptian destination airport of Hurghada was the clear winner on the German package holiday market last month with a 102% rise in bookings compared to May 2016, figures from leading reservations provider Traveltainment showed. This followed four months of high growth rates which have outpaced last year’s sales decline, reflecting the clear comeback for Red Sea beach holidays on the German market.

In Spain, the Canary Islands also enjoyed good demand last month with double-digit growth rates for each of the three major islands, reversing several months of weak bookings. Las Palmas and Fuerteventura each saw a 17% rise in bookings while Tenerife South was up by 13%. Palma also performed well with a 14% rise in bookings last month, after four months of lower sales for Majorca’s airport.

There was relatively good news for Antalya where bookings fell by only 5% in May. This was the lowest drop for many months for the Turkish Riviera gateway airport, although bookings still remain below last year which saw a 30% decline for the year as a whole.

Elsewhere, Varna had a disappointing month with a 15% fall in bookings as interest in Bulgaria as an alternative summer holiday destination tailed off.
