Tourists who want to visit North Korea are invited by the National Tourism Administration of the country, DPR Korea Tour for “work tours”.
The website describes the experience as “interesting,” underlining that this “package” is becoming popular with tourists.
These tours are advertised in English on the website.
As it is emphasized, “through tours, tourists will get to know the country’s rural politics and culture and will see the willing, cheerful locals of the locals as they deal with local activities.”
Organized groups of tourists plant rice with their hands, pull weeds from the fields and harvest fruit on the farms and orchards.
The photos on the page depict two tourists growing rice and another photographing the farm.
Tourists who are attracted to this holiday model are mainly retired and young people who want to volunteer and experience life-style experiences in North Korea.
According to the information provided, however, tourists have to pay for this …
And even though volunteering sounds fine, however, in the case of travel to North Korea it creates moral dilemmas as the regime is known for inhumane working conditions, ill-treatment for citizens, imprisonment , the poor living of citizens.
Human rights experts believe that Kim Jong Usin uses this policy to control people who are forced to work without remuneration and without rights.
The most likely scenario is that tourists who choose to visit North Korea will not be exposed to such images, though.
Critics of the tourist model that North Korea seeks to promote indicate that tourists do not see the real living conditions of the residents and are supervised by state officials while others believe that tourists are used as a propaganda tools and help to strengthen the dictatorship as they are presented as foreign visitors who come to North Korea to greet the “Supreme Leader.”
