Interview: Egypt's Trade Minister calls for EU investment in country

Egypt’s Trade and Industry Minister Tarek Kabil called for mass EU investment in Egypt, noting that the extensive reforms legislated in the country recently facilitate investment and clear bureaucracy, during an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), following the end of the 2nd EU-Arab Summit in Athens.

The minister hailed Greece’s support on the issue, adding that both countries have common interests which they are pursuing in economy and trade.

“Greece is one of Egypt’s staunchest supporters in the EU, due to the complete alignment between the two countries. The EU can help Egypt a lot, significantly more than they are today. The stability of Egypt, politically and economically has a direct benefit for the EU, and for the stability of the whole region,” he said, adding that the best way to stop illegal immigration is to create jobs. “What we expect from the EU is to help us create jobs, to deepen our industry and improve the economic situation in Egypt. Security will not stop illegal migration. It will help, but this is not the main cause,” he noted.

Mr. Kabil clarified that Egypt is interested in a big EU-backed program that will create permanent jobs. “We’re doing small things here and there. We signed an agreement with the EU to train 2,000 people. But training is not a job,” he said and pointed to Turkey as an example of a country that has received massive financial support from the European Union.
