UK tourism: Greater demand for travel compared to 2017

Fears of a reduction in British spending on travel reservations for the summer of 2018 are negated, as GfK’s booking figures record a 7% increase during the first week of January, compared to the same period last year.

The average sale price of packages was reduced by 12 pounds per week by 13 January, but this was offset by an increase of 52 pounds per week by 20 January and by 51 pounds for all bookings made so far.

The bookings for the summer of 2018 show a 4% increase so far.

While retail sales in the UK, excluding travel, have declined sharply with family spending dropping to the lowest 5-year levels (Visa), spending on travel grew by 7% compared to 2016.

Bookings for Turkey showed an impressive 122% rise  last week compared to the corresponding 2017 week, and so far they go at + 78%

On the other hand, reservations for Canary Islands have dropped by 5% and 6for Balearics by 6%. Bookings for the United States have also decreased by 12%. The demand for family trips up to January 13 is at + 5% and for all inclusive at + 6% , with shorter travel times from 4 to 6 and 7 nights gaining ground in comparison to fortnight holiday breaks.
