German tourism: Strong increase in air travel to Greece during 2017

A strong increase in the air traffic from German airports to Greek destinations was recorded during 2017.

The total number of German passengers departing from their country by air reached a new record of 117.6 million showing an annual growth of 5.1%.

Based on data from the country’s 24 largest airports, the German Federal Statistical Office, airline passengers heading to Greece amounted to 3.5 million, an increase of 19.2% compared to the previous year.

Travel to Europe increased by 6% compared to 2016, reaching 73.3 million passengers.

Spain, with 14.1 million passengers, remained the most popular destination, but its growth was limited to 3.3%.

UK followed with 7.3 million passengers (+ 5.1% from 2016) and Italy with 7 million passengers (+ 6.2%).

On the contrary, traffic to Turkey declined by 3.6% to 6.2 million, as did Denmark by 8.2% to 1.4 million.

Departures for long-haul destinations were up by 8.4% with Asia +5.4%, America +3.6% and Africa +35.2% (reaching 3.2 million passengers).

In particular, Egypt grew by 69% to 1.4 million and Morocco by 27.3% to 500,000 passengers.

On average, 322,000 passengers departed daily induring 2017 on flights from Germany.
