Norway’s ambassador interview: Expansion of ‘Norwegian engagement’ in Greece

Shipping, maritime issues, green energy and water management programmes, but also tourism, migration and asylum management are among likely areas of bilateral cooperation between Greece and Norway, the Norwegian Ambassador in Athens J’rn Gjelstad said in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency published on Monday.

Relations between the two countries were good and constructive, he stressed, while there had been a significant expansion of Norwegian engagement in Greece in the last decade, in areas such as entrepreneurship and innovation, support for young people and the poorest segments of Greek society but also support for reforms, such as the digitalisation of public administration services or fighting corruption.

He also appeared optimistic about Greece’s prospects and planned exit from the adjustment programme in August, noting that the “hard part” relating to fiscal adjustment and reforms to the “Greek mindset” was about to be finalised. The country now had to write the “next chapter” that relating to building sustainable economic growth and making the changes for future prosperity, he added, while expressing his confidence that Greece will be able to achieve this goal over time as well.
