Visiting Harare and the Greek expatriates of Zimbabwe, Deputy Foreign Minister Terens Quick proposed that 2018 be named the year of Africa’s Greek diaspora in a bid to bring Greeks everywhere closer together, according to a foreign ministry announcement on Monday. He said he had put the proposal to other expatriate Greek organisations on other continents and it had been well received, ANA reports.
During the meeting, the Greek community in Zimbabwe asked for greater support in the teaching of Greek, resumption of ERT satellite broadcasts to sub-Saharan Africa, which were stopped in 2013 and a resumption of summer camps in Greece for the children of expatriates. They also asked that the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad act as mediator to arrange that second-hand traditional costumes be sent from Greece to support the Greek folk dancing club.
