The beachfront of the enclosed city of Varosha, which extends by 1.5 km to the side of Famagusta, has reopened. During the reopening, citizens and journalists were allowed to enter under the watchful eye of the “police forces” of the regime as well as the occupying army, int.ert.gr reports.
“I consider the decision by Turkey and the occupying regime to extend part of the beachfront of the besieged city of Famagusta, as an illegal and clear violation of international law and U.N. Security Council resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992),” noted Cyprus President Nikos Anastasiades.
The Greek and Cypriot Delegation of the European People’s Party to the European Parliament, sent a letter concerning Turkey’s illegal actions in Famagusta, to the leadership of the European Institutions (Charles Michel, Ursula von der Leyen, David Sassoli) and the EU High Representative for Security and Defense, Josep Borrell.
In their letter, the MEPs point out that with this illegal action, Turkey aims to irreparably destroy efforts to relaunch exploratory talks regarding a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem, stressing that such provocative actions must stop immediately. The MEPs also call on the European Union to ask Turkey to comply with the UN resolutions and respect the European values, by returning Famagusta to its rightful inhabitants, thus proving its commitment to efforts to achieve a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue.
