European Union reaches agreement on Covid-19 certificates for summer travel

The European Union reached a provisional deal on Thursday on Covid-19 certificates designed to open up tourism across the 27-nation bloc this summer, according to an EU source familiar with the talks, Reuters reports.

European Parliament lawmakers and current EU president Portugal representing the bloc’s 27 members sealed the agreement after the fourth round of negotiations on Thursday afternoon.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Alternate Foreign Affairs Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis welcomed the European Union’s decision late on Thursday to adopt a Covid-19 vaccination certificate, in a post on social media.

Commenting on the deal of the European Parliament and the European Council to adopt the European Commission’s proposal for the certificate that will simplify travel among EU member states, Mitsotakis noted, “Today’s provisional agreement on the EU Digital COVID-19 Certificate is an extremely positive development. Greece has been a strong advocate for it from the outset, as it will facilitate the freedom of movement within the EU and contribute to the efforts for economic recovery.”

Varvitsiotis, also writing on Twitter, announced, “We have a deal! The agreement on the Green Digital Certificate paves the way for safe travel within the EU this summer.”
