For the summer of 2022, Crete, Zakynthos, and Kos will be the three favorite Greek islands for the Dutch and Belgians. This is shown by an online survey by Griekenland.net among 1,224 visitors in the first four months of this year. More than 18% of Greece lovers opt for a holiday to Crete this summer. Followed by the islands of Zakynthos with 14% and Kos with 11% of the votes. On Crete, most Dutch arrivals are at Heraklion airport with direct flights from several airports in The Netherlands. The first Dutch holiday flight to the Cretan capital this year was already in February. More and more the Dutch are also arriving at Chania airport
Crete favorite by Dutch with 18%
Crete is this year’s favorite of 18% of the Dutch who go on holiday to Greece. A 38% increase in popularity from the same Griekenland.net survey last year. Zakynthos boosts from the third position to second this summer and switched positions with Kos. Lesvos follows in fourth place this year and seems to be back as a destination in The Netherlands. Last year this North Aegean Island was just in eighth place in Greece. Lesvos received 9% of the votes for this summer.
Rhodes and Samos share fifth place for the summer of 2022 with both 8% of the votes. The green Ionian Island of Corfu follows closely in seventh place with 7% of the votes. Other Greek islands where the Dutch like to go on holiday this summer are Karpathos (6%), Kefalonia (6%), Santorini (4%), Lefkas (3%), and Mykonos (2%).
Greek islands are popular during the April school holidays
April school holidays, from 23rd of April till 8th of May the Greek islands were incredibly popular as destinations in Holland. May has been a bit behind with bookings so far. June is already getting a lot busier and the summer months of July and August are on track for Greece in 2022. For this summer, the Greeks expect an equalization of the record number of tourists from 2019. When no fewer than 31.3 million tourists came to the holiday country. More than one million traveled from the Netherlands to Greece that summer. This is also a record for Greece.
