More and more Germans are choosing October for their annual travel getaways, turning this autumn month into a new peak season for tourism.
According to the Travel Distribution Association (VIR) and analyses by Travel Data + Analytics GmbH, bookings for October 2025 have increased by 75.6% compared to the same month in 2019. For the entire summer season (May–October), the increase reaches 28%, while compared to last year alone, October recorded an additional increase of 10.9% — almost double the total increase of the summer (6%).
Three key factors are driving the new trend:
Climatic conditions: Temperatures in destinations such as the Canary Islands, Spain, Italy and Greece remain ideal, between 20 and 28 degrees, even in late autumn.
The cost: Accommodation and airfare prices are significantly lower than in July and August, while travelers benefit from special offers and discounts.
Demographics: The increase in “empty nesters” and retirees, who do not depend on school holidays, gives them the flexibility to travel outside the traditional peak season.
Generally, “empty nesters” are usually middle-aged or older couples who:
- no longer have family obligations with young children,
- have more time freedom, and
- often have greater financial comfort for off-peak travel.
Greece, as noted, has already extended its tourist season until November, following demand.
“The classic idea of ??a summer vacation no longer suits more and more travelers,” notes Michael Buller, a member of the board of directors of VIR. “We see a steady shift towards October and we believe this trend will intensify in the coming years.”
The conclusion is clear: October is no longer a “dead” period for tourism. On the contrary, it is developing into a strong alternative to the traditional summer peak, offering a combination of good weather, better prices and less crowds.
