A new chapter in international cooperation opens for the Municipality of Rethymno, following the signing of the memorandum of cooperation with the Municipality of Chongqing of the Fuling Region, in the People’s Republic of China. This agreement marks the beginning of a multifaceted relationship, aiming to strengthen the ties between Greece and China at the local level, through culture, education, science, and tourism development.
Chongqing, a metropolitan city with a population of nearly 32 million inhabitants, is considered the economic, productive and transportation center of the entire southwestern China. With this size and importance, the cooperation proposal addressed to the Municipality of Rethymno acquires particular weight and is recognized as a special honor for the Cretan city. Rethymno is now called upon to develop bridges of communication with the most populous city in the world, which has an enormous cultural wealth and historical background.
The memorandum provides for cooperation in many different sectors. The industrial economy, commercial and accounting relations, medicine and healthcare, science and education are key areas for the exchange of knowledge and experiences. At the same time, special emphasis is placed on culture and tourism, sectors that can highlight Rethymno at an international level, highlighting the history, tradition, but also the modern creative forces of the place.
This cooperation is not limited to its institutional dimension. Rethymno hopes to benefit from the dynamic Chinese market, as well as from the opportunities offered by extroversion in matters of cultural diplomacy. The city of Crete can enhance its international image, attracting not only visitors, but also new forms of cooperation at the level of universities, research institutions and cultural organizations.
For its part, the Chinese city attaches particular importance to the development of friendly relations with international partners, based on the principle of mutual benefit and friendship. Rethymno, with its own historical depth and cultural heritage, is an ideal interlocutor and partner in this context.
The memorandum of cooperation is not a formal symbolism, but a tool that can be transformed into practice: with exchanges of cultural events, student and scientific programs, with joint actions on health and social care issues, but also with initiatives that will strengthen tourism and trade.
This decision points the way to a new concept in the management of local extroversion: a concept that sees beyond geographical boundaries and connects local communities with the international scene, building bridges of mutual understanding and cooperation.
