Demand for Athens properties grows due to Airbnb – prices up first time since 2008

Apart from the housing market in downtown Athens, it seems US villa rental platform Airbnb is also impacting properties used for professional purposes in the city’s centre, as demand for old office buildings grows.

Owners of properties used as offices in the past have decided to convert them into lodgings and lease them to tourists, increasing their income by exploiting the rise in demand for tourism in the Greek capital.

The data are were made public by the well-known real estate consultants “Danos”, in its latest report on the domestic property market. “We see, in the centre of Athens, that the demand for lower class office space has increased due to the high demand for their conversion into boutique hotels, Airbnb apartments, etc.”, the analysts of the company, which cooperates with BNP Paribas Real Estate in Greece, notes.

Furthermore, Greek daily newspaper Kathimerini reports that Greece imporved its ranking in 2017 in terms of residential property values. According to the Global Property Guide, it ranks 39th among 45 countries and prices grew by 0.2% in the Q4 2017 for the first time since 2008.
