Greek top court nullifies permit to high-rise building near Athens Acropolis

The Council of State, Greece’s Supreme Administrative Court, announced on Friday that it is canceling the approval of a building permit for the construction of a nine-story hotel with a three-level basement and a roof near the Acropolis, according to greekreporter.com.

The issue had sparked wide negative reactions recently, leading to the Central Archaeological Council (KAS) revoking its initial decision to advise the Ministry of the Environment to grant permission for the building to be constructed.

No building around the hill of the Acropolis is permitted to surpass certain heights, all of which are several meters lower than the actual altitude of the Parthenon and the other monuments of the Acropolis Hill.

After the alteration of the original KAS decision, the Council of State decided to cancel the pre-approval of the building permit as it had “lost its legal footing.”
