Consumer and business “Vodafone Red” subscribers will be able to use their existing bundles of minutes, SMS and data for roaming in the EU, with no additional charge. For customers not on a Red plan, Vodafone is reducing the cost of its daily passes in the EU by 40%, to €2.99 from €4.99.
Without the package, customers will pay the new regulated rates for roaming in the EU from April 30. Communications will be charged the same as at home, plus a surcharge of €0.0615 per minute for making calls, €0.0246 per SMS and €0.0615 per MB. Incoming calls will cost €0.0140 per minute.
Since 2007, the roaming regulations have steadily lowered the maximum roaming charges allowable within the EU. A proposed regulation, which has passed the European parliament in April 2014 but still needs to be approved by the Council of the European Union, proposes to abolish end-user roaming charges in the EU. While originally proposed to go into effect in December 2015, the change has proven controversial, and the latest proposal as of June 2015 has a June 2017 effect date.
