First Greek microsatellite UPSat launched into space

UPSat is the first microsatellite based on open-source software fully constructed in Greece, the product of the University of Patras and the Libre Space Foundation under the QB50 program.

The QB50 is part of the European Research Project FP7 Space, coordinated by the Von Karman Institute. The program concerns the conditional construction of microsatellites, the launch and operation of a set of 50 microsatellites, which will be used for the collection of data and for the study of the earth’s lower thermosphere (380 km above the earth’s surface).

It should be noted that Greece participates with two projects in the QB50, through the Patras and the Thrace University.

The UPSat will be launched from Kennedy Space Center with the other microsatellites on March 28, on the ATLAS V rocket (01.00 and 03.00 Greece time).

You can watch the satellite’s step-by-step “journey” and meet the people who worked hard to launch Greece into space, at webdocs.ert.gr/upsat.

The feature’s research and coordination is the work of Maria Tsiros, in the context of her practicum with the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation’s New Media.
