Google can now predict if your flight is going to be delayed

An update on the popular Google Flights app draws on historic data and flight trends to predict flight delays with significant accuracy.

It essentially looks at things like the location of the flight route, the weather, and the aircraft, and searches for patterns or trends that typically cause delays.

If the algorithm is 80% sure the flight will be delayed, it will let the user know.

“Around this time of year, snowbirds fly out on tropical getaways, skiers and snowboarders take a weekend to hit the slopes and potential flight delays are stressful for all travellers,” noted Google’s flight product manager Anket Mathur.

“Google Flights can now help you predict those flight delays,” he added

And the algorithms are so advanced, they can “predict some delays even when this information isn’t available from airlines yet”, Mr Mathur continued.

“We still recommend getting to the airport with enough time to spare, but hope this information can manage expectations and prevent surprises.”

Users simply search their flight on the Google Flights app using the airline and flight route and they can check if their flight is likely to be delayed.

The Google Flights app already warned about flight delays, but the update means it can predict delays also.
