“Investment in research and innovation is a central strategic priority for a new growth model [that is] socially, economically and environmentally sustainable, based on knowledge and its exploitation, through the production of high added-value goods and services,” new Deputy Development and Investments Minister Christos Dimas said to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency radio station “Praktoreio 104.9 FM” on Friday.
In charge of research and technology issues, Dimas pointed out that these faced many obstacles in Greece, including the limited connections between research centers and universities with enterprises and a loss of specialist staff and scientists as a result of brain drain, as well as restricted access to funding.
“There are structural difficulties that discourage investments and a generally unfriendly business environment,” he said, noting that the knowledge and experience generated by research remained largely “introverted”. The decision to incorporate the General Secretariat for Research and Technology with the development and investments ministry “signals our intention to more effectively link scientific research and technology with business innovation,” he stressed.
