Google application warned people about earthquake off Greek island of Crete

Residents of Crete woke up on Wednesday morning (29/12) by a notification from a Google application and an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, protothema.gr reports.

Several residents received a message, through the Android Earthquake Alerts service, and were informed of the strong seismic vibration just seconds before it occurred.

This Google app for Android phones sends messages when strong earthquakes occur. “Slight vibrations are expected. The initial estimate of size 5.4 at a distance of 86.8km”, wrote the message received by the residents of Crete.

It is worth noting that Greece is the first European country to which the service has been extended. It is also available in New Zealand and Washington.
