Hellenic Statistical Authority: Greek trade deficit up 12.5% in May

Greek trade deficit widened by 12.5 pct in May this year as exports fell more than imports in the month, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Friday.

The statistics service, in a report on the country’s merchandise trade, said that the trade deficit widened by 3.9 pct in the January-May period.

The value of import-arrivals totaled 3.531 billion euros in May, down 3.3 pct from the same month last year (excluding oil products imports grew 0.2 pct). The value of export-deliveries totaled 2.022 billion euros, down 12.4 pct from May 2015 (excluding oil products exports fell 6.4 pct).

The trade deficit totaled 1.509 billion euros in May, up 12.5 pct (excluding oil products the trade deficit grew by 8.2 pct).

In the January-May period, the value of imports totaled 17.938 billion euros, down 3.3 pct from the same period in 2015 (excluding oil products imports grew 8.0 pct). The value of exports totaled 9.866 billion euros in May, down 8.5 pct from May last year (excluding oil products exports fell 0.7 pct). The country’s trade deficit amounted to 8.072 billion euros in the five-month period, up 3.9 pct from 2015 (excluding oil products the trade deficit grew 18.6 pct).
