Greek Alternate Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura has decided to scrap an obsolete Tourism Territory Development Control decree — known as PETA — facilitating procedures for the renovation, re-operation and upgrade of tourist accommodation facilities in rural areas, as Tornos News exclusively revealed on September 13.
Her decision opens the way for 1-3 star accommodation facilities as well as rooms to let operations in rural areas to proceed with modernization procedures as well as much needed upgrades and to take part in the EU’s National Strategic Reference Framework development and financing programs (ESPA)
It also foresees the re-opening of hotels currently out of business in cases where investor interest has been expressed and aims at simplifying the framework of tourism operations in efforts to boost competitiveness and improve the quality of the country’s tourism product.
The specific regulation has been in force since 1986 and was considered outdated and incoherent with the current tourism market reality.
