Greek Tourism Minister Kountoura sees higher than expected revenue in 2016

Tourism revenue in 2016 will be much higher than initially estimated, Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura on Thursday said during the debate on budget held in Parliament.

Tourism has recorded its best performance over the last two years as a result of government policies despite the constant challenges and problems,” Kountoura stated.

She also said that Greece achieved record arrivals and revenue in 2015 thanks to direct operational and communication acts, although it was a year of unprecedented difficulties, two elections, a referendum, political negotiations, political and economic problems, strong pressure from the institutions, a constant threat of Grexit and continuous shocks from abroad to the international image of the country.

Kountoura underlined that 2016 data surpassed all estimates as Greece was on alert and dealt efficiently with any geostrategic developments in the wider area, the refugee issue, terrorism, the attempted coup in Turkey and the Brexit referendum.

The minister also referred to the opening to new markets in order to attract high income tourists and the promotion of a series of Greek destinations. She also said that the government focused on the creation of a friendly environment to attract tourist investments.
