“The measures may not be sufficient to recover the sustainability of the Greek debt in the medium and long term,” stated IMF spokesperson Mr. Gerry Rice in a scheduled news briefing that took place in Washington DC yesterday.
“The IMF does not request additional austerity,” said Mr. Rice. “We support a program leading to a 1.5% primary surplus. This is our desired goal, but should the Europeans and Greece decide to go with a higher surplus we can only support it if it is also supported by structural measures. As IMF we must ensure that there are measures to back the 3.5% surplus up”, stated Mr. Rice.
Regarding the participation of the IMF in the Greek program Mr. Rice said that discussions are still ongoing and that the Fund needs reliable forecasts.
