IMF: Prospects for concluding 2nd review in Athens now good

The prospects of successfully concluding the second review of Greece’s programme are now good but the Eurozone has to provide adequate assurances of a reliable strategy that will ensure the sustainability of Greece’s debt, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Friday.

IMF spokesman Gerry Rice, in a statement, said that significant progress has been made in recent weeks, though some policy issues that “remain open.” It was now possible to reliably say, however, that the prospects for a successful conclusion of the negotiations on these issues during the talks that will take place in Athens were good, he said.

In such an agreement, he added, the policies must be supplemented by negotiations that will follow with the other Eurozone countries in order to ensure adequate assurances regarding the sustainability of Greece’s debt, before the programme is presented to the IMF board for approval.
