German MEPs say that Greece is entitled to debt relief

Greek media report that in Bundestag’s session on Thursday, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble was severely criticized by the opposition parties, regarding Greece. Following a request by the Greens, the Bundestag discussed topical issues in view of the EU summit and within this scope, speakers talked about controversial European issues and in particular, Greece’s crisis.

According to the same reports, contrary to its stance in all previous Bundestag sessions, the governing party of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) praised Greece’s progress in the implementation of structural reforms and made an indirect reference to the importance of a debt relief for Greece. The austerity policy imposed by Chancellor Angela Merkel and Wolfgang Schäuble has made economic crisis and poverty in Southern countries deepen, and this should end, said Sven Schindler on behalf of the Greens.
