Athens stock exchange ends higher for best half-year performance since 1999

Athens stock exchange ended up during the last session of week and month on Friday, with the market gaining 0.49 pct to close at 823.74 points. Investor interest was focused on banks and the power utility PPC.

The bourse ended 0.39 pct up on a weekly basis and 6.26 pct up since the start of June, while the bourse has gained 27.98 pct during the first half of the year, its best performance since the first half of 1999 when it peaked historically.

The Large Cap index rose 0.37 pct and the Mid Cap index ended 1.84 pct higher. Turnover was at 74.987 million euros in volume of 74,993,046 shares.

Piraeus Bank (3.86 pct), Eurobank (2.62 pct) and National Bank (2.46 pct) were top gainers among blue chip stocks, while EXAE (1.73 pct), Mytilineos (1.31 pct) and Titan (1.20 pct) suffered the heaviest losses. Among market sectors, Banks (1.98 pct) and Commerce (1.89 pct) scored gains, while Raw Materials (1.31 pct) and Financial Services (0.75 pct) suffered losses.

National Bank and Pireaus Bank were the most heavily traded securities of the day. Broadly, advancers led decliners by 77 to 37 with another 23 issues unchanged. Leventeris (20.00 pct), Euromedica (19.84 pct) and Pigasos (18.35 pct) scored big gains, while Dionic (18.42 pct), Sfakianakis (18.33 pct) and Pairis (13.08 pct) were top losers.
