88,7% of exporters face problems at Thessaloniki port from night shift cancellation

Businesses and exporters in Northern Greece are facing serious problems by the cancelation of the night shift in Thessaloniki port’s Gate 16, where containers and international trade are handled, including higher costs and a loss of credibility, a report by the Association of Exporters of Northern Greece (SEVE) recorded on Wednesday.

The vast majority of the businesses that took part in the report (88.7 pct) said they are already facing problems from the last strikes called by customs officials and the temporary abolition of the night shift.

The greatest problems they are facing are delays in the loading and unloading of ships (81.8 pct), followed by an inability to meet the required timeframes for the delivery of goods to foreign customers (67.3 pct), difficulties in sending goods to foreign customers (56.4 pct), business credibility questioned by foreign associates (54.5 pct), difficulty in receiving raw materials and commodities, which are still abroad (52.7 pct) and an increased cost of transportation due to a change of departure port or a combination of means of transport (38.2 pct).

“All the above demonstrate the need to immediately reinstate the shift at Gate 16 of Thessaloniki Port in order to avoid any further impact on exports, production and export businesses, the local and national economy and employment,” the union noted.
