Greece's State Budget for 2018 approved by Parliament

After a five-day parliamentary procedure, where disputes between the government and the opposition were intense, the national budget for 2018 was passed on Tuesday. 153 MPs voted in favor of the budget, while 144 MPs from the opposition and all independent MPs voted against. Three MPs were absent.

Greece is coming back regaining its economic independence and its status in the international stage, and has the opportunity to get rid of the malaises of the past, underlined Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Mr. Tsipras also criticized indirectly New Democracy on the issue of tax heavens, explaining that New Democracy President Kyriakos Mitsotakis does not say much on this issue. “You failed in both supporting and opposing to the memoranda”, said on his part Kyriakos Mitsotakis, stressing that the government has already put the country under a fourth memorandum, with measures amounting to 5.1 billion euros, and with decreases in pensions and the tax-free threshold. 2018 will be a year of political overthrow, he added.
