Record job surplus in Greece during March thanks to tourism

Wage employment in Greece’s private sector grew in March, recording the best performance since 2001 thanks to tourism.

According to the Labour ministry’s report by the “Ergani” IT system, the balance of hirings/dismissals in March was positive by 55,494 new job positions as new hirings totaled 196,142 and dismissals totaled 140,648. In the three-month period from January to March, the balance of hirings/dismissals was positive by 55,580 job positions, the best performance since 2001. New hirings totaled 500,363 and dismisssals totaled 444,783 in the first quarter.

Tourism contributed most to the growth of employment in Greece among all other sectors of the local economy, as hospitality enterprises in Greece recorded the highest surplus between hirings and dismissals.  Data for March show that hirings by accommodation units (23,858) exceeded the number of employee dismissals (7,506) creating a positive industry surplus of 16,352 added jobs. The food sector which is closely connected to tourism also achieved a positive surplus of 10,973.

5 out of 10 specialties with best wage employment balance were in tourism

Furthermore, the 10 most popular specialties were related to the tourism sector as well. Waiters and bartenders recorded the best performance with 7.411 more jobs added.

The fourth best-performing professions were hotel and restaurant cooks (+ 4,689) followed by maids in hotels and homes (+4,029) employees of hotels, restaurants, stores etc. (+2.520) and cleaners of hotels, offices, shops etc (+2.501).

The increase in employment due to tourism is also apparent on a regional level, since the highly touristic South Aegean shows the second best surplus between hirings and dismissals (+10,444) in the country, after the central Attica Region, followed by Crete with a surplus of 9,926 added jobs.
