The Greek unemployment rate eased to 20.6 pct of the workforce in January this year, from 20.8 pct in December 2017 and the upwardly revised rate of 23.2 pct in January 2017, Hellenic Statistical Authority announced on Thursday, according to ANA.
Among the country’s regions, Epirus-Western Macedonia saw the highest unemployment rate (26.2 pct in January 2018 from 27.4 pct in January 2017), followed by Peloponnese-Western Greece-Ionian Islands (21.7 pct from 23.2 pct), Attica (21 pct from 22.5 pct, Macedonia-Thrace (20.2 pct from 23.5 pct), Aegean (19.8 pct from 18.9 pct), Thessaly-Central Greece (18.6 pct from 23.6 pct) and Crete (16.4 pct from 22.1 pct).
Tourism contributed most to the growth of employment in Greece among all other sectors of the local economy, as hospitality enterprises in Greece recorded the highest surplus between hirings and dismissals.
The increase in employment due to tourism is also apparent on a regional level, since the highly touristic South Aegean shows the second best surplus between hirings and dismissals (+10,444) in the country, after the central Attica Region, followed by Crete with a surplus of 9,926 added jobs.
