Greek tax authority chief: Revenues from booking platforms could reach €700 million

The Greek state stands to collect 700 million euros in tax revenues from the sharing economy – such as from rental platforms like Booking and Airbnb – in 2023 based on the current trend, Independent Authority for Public Revenue Governor George Pitsilis said on Wednesday, ANA reports.

Speaking to a parliamentary committee on a draft bill related to digital platforms, Pitsilis announced that he made that forecast based on data from the first seven months of 2023 which show that declared revenues are 30% higher than that of the same period in 2022. Specifically, declared tax revenues rose from 268 million euros to 347 million euros from the sharing economy. If this continues, it may be possible they exceed 700 million, he noted. As for platforms themselves, from the 60 million euros they declared as revenues in 2017, they have now reached close to an impressive 540 million euros in 2022, he added.

Commenting on the data at the same committee meeting, National Economy & Finance Deputy Minister Harry Theoharis pointed out that the data Pitsilis presented was even more optimistic than the expected revenues he mentioned a day earlier of 600 million euros.

The bill reviewed by the committee is titled “Incorporation of EU Directive 2021/514 of the March 22, 2021, Council amending Directive 2011/16/ΕU on administrative cooperation in the field of taxation (DAC7)”. It relates to administrative cooperation on tax issues, taxation procedure matters, drafting the state budget, and the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund.

The draft law was approved in principle by the party deputies on the committee. Ruling New Democracy and opposition PASOK-Movement for Change parties supported it and MPs of other opposition parties reserved judgment for the plenary debate next week.
