Greek trade sector backs tourism revenue increase

  • We want foreign visitors to spend 100 euros a day in the country’s shops

The Greek trade sector is backing tourism revenue increase, with the president of the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce & Entrepreneurship (ESEE) Yiannis Kafounis noting that the goal is for tourists to leave more money in the country’s commercial businesses than they do today.

Speaking at a meeting with accredited editors, Mr. Kafounis emphasized: We want foreign visitors to spend 100 euros a day in the country’s shops.

In the meantime, ESEE is also preparing a survey to determine how much money our foreign visitors ultimately spend in Greek stores. For this reason, it looks forward to strengthening cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism, since the goal is to increase sales of Greek products, in addition to clothes, etc., as Mr. Kafounis clarifies.

Let’s not forget that ESEE focuses on promoting the “Shopping in Greece” experience as a distinct tourist product that also needs support from the competent ministry. Trade is a key pillar of the Greek economy, with multidimensional importance. According to ELSTAT data, almost 25% of all businesses are commercial. Of the 918,724 businesses that were active in the sectors of industry, construction, trade, and services, the sector represents the largest number (226,009).
