Greek Alternate Foreign Min optimistic that refugee crisis will improve

They will take the people from Greece, asylum will be given, mechanisms will be set up,” Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Nikos Xydakis  said in an interview on Friday.

Xydakis stressed that what is needed is to develop resettlement programs as soon as possible and convince the refugees not to gather at the borders.

He also stated that the way the selection of refugees is made constitutes a violation of the rules of international law. He added that refugees should be convinced that the borders are not open to everyone. “It is not open to all, they are open for few people and they should not be gathered there,” he said and added: “We have to convince these people to go to some hosting facilities which are being prepared.”

Situation improvement with NATO

He stressed that they to the developments on the refugee issue lies within Turkey. He also expressed optimism that the situation will improve with the presence of NATO in the Aegean.

Asked if Greece will ask for EU funds in order to address the situation, Xydakis said: “It will ask for what is entitled to based on the current emergency situation.”

In conclusion he said that Greece has rescued 120,000 people compared to other states that build fences.
