US hopes for Cyprus deal by January, citing new US-Cuba ties
Washington believes that a solution to the Cyprus problem could be reached before US President Barack Obama steps down from office in January 2017.
According to Greek daily Kathimerini, officials are aware of Washington’s view, which echoes comments made by US Secretary of State John Kerry, who, during his visit to Athens in December, said that the island’s reunification was finally “within reach”.
Positive development
Sources in Athens reportedly told Kathimerini that the US is keen to see a peace deal on Cyprus as it would mark a positive development in a region exposed to volatility from different directions.
Optimism over Cyprus is also based on the fact that the problem has been on the same “within reach” list as the normalisation of US-Cuba ties, which have seen historic progress in recent months.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-backed talks resumed last May, aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
