US VP Biden: “The European Union must offer debt relief to Greece”

The US Vice President Joe Biden stressed that the European Union must provide debt relief to Greece, in a telephone conversation with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday. According to the White House, Mr. Biden “underscored the need for Europe to follow through on its commitment to put Greece’s debt on a sustainable path through debt relief”.

The two also reportedly have “agreed on the need for continued swift progress on Greece’s economic reforms and on the importance of Greece, the IMF, and European institutions working constructively to conclude the first review of Greece’s economic reform program in a timely manner”.

As expected, the implementation of the critical agreement between the EU and Turkey, in relation to the refugee crisis, was also on the agenda.

Finally, the American VP congratulated PM Tsipras on the progress Greece has made on the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline and developing energy cooperation with Bulgaria. These are regarded as “important steps in strengthening the Greek economy and advancing European energy security and independence”, the White House statement said.
