Greek opposition New Democracy’s new political committee convenes on Wednesday

The new political committee of the main opposition party New Democracy, which was elected over the weekend’s party conference, has arranged to convene on Wednesday.

Party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis will preside over the new political committee’s first meeting, which will be tasked with deciding upon a new committee secretary. The meeting has been arranged for 4pm on Wednesday, at the party’s central offices.

Mitsotakis pleased with outcome of New Democracy conference

New Democracy’s conference concluded on Sunday evening, where Kyriakos Mitsotakis outlined the party’s overall program and strategy as the main opposition in Parliament.

The conservative party’s central political narrative will be the “Truth Agreement”, the 25 points of which were detailed by VP Kostis Hatzidakis. This plan includes a series of initiatives to tackle tax evasion, modernizing the public sector and improving investment opportunities among others.

Senior party officers, such as former PM Antonis Samaras, VPs Hatzidakis and Adonis Georgiadis, Dora Bakoyanni and Nikos Dendias,  escalated their criticism against the government.

Mitsotakis: “New Democracy’s goal is to reform Greece”

The President of New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined that his party’s new goal is the formation of Greece, during his opening speech at the New Democracy conference.

Mr. Mitsotakis heralded change within his party, amid the serious developments in New Democracy’s youth party ONNED, underlining that “united we will bring oxygen to our Greece that is suffocating and in danger”. The main opposition leader, who assumed leadership of the party in January, promised that he will only speak the truth “as hard as that may be”.

Later on in his speech Mr. Mitsotakis attacked the government and accused its of being the “most incompetent and obsessive government since the restoration of Democracy” and stressed that his party will bring a new creative cycle of reconstruction and build “a new Greece, on solid foundations this time”.

Mitsotakis says no to SYRZA proposal for consent at party’s convention

Kyriakos Mitsotakis indirectly turned down SYRIZA’s call for consent, during his address at the party’s 10th convention responding with a smile that ‘the microphones were off’, to a proposal voiced by Education Minister Nikos Filis that SYRIZA was open to cooperate with conservative political forces.

During his address to the party delegates Mitsotakis underlined that the main priority in Europe was to stem the tide of rising populism and nationalism across the continent.

‘The forces of reason are facing these problems’, he said. He reminded the delegates of New Democracy’s longtime European outlook, adding that it was the only party that could defeat populism.

The convention approved the leadership’s proposal for a new articles of association, including the limit to a 5-year term for the President, separation of party and state positions, an annual convention with 2,000 delegates, smaller political committee of 300 members of MPs, ex officio, and elected members, the abolition of the executive secretariat etc.
