Tusk calls for Eurogroup on Greece, turns down Tsipras request for EU Summit

We have to avoid a situation of renewed uncertainty for Greece. We need a date for a Eurogroup meeting in the not distant future. In days, not weeks” commented the President of the European Council Donald Tusk.

When asked about the latest developments and cancellation of a Eurogroup on Thursday, Mr. Tusk explained that he was convinced that ‘more work’ is needed from Europe’s Finance Ministers.

He confirmed that he talked to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and revealed that he had extensive talks with the heads of the Eurogroup Jeroen Dijsselbloem and European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.

The European Council President has essentially rejected the proposal by Greek PM Alexis Tsipras for an EU Summit meeting on the Greek issue after the break down of talks between Greece and the Quartet, during a joint press conference with Albanian Premier, Wednesday.

He revealed he had a phone contact with Tsipras on Wednesday, but made no reference whatsoever to the Greek PM’s request for EU leaders to meet and discuss the Greek matter. The Polish politician only mentioned the need for a Eurogroup meeting, pinpointing it to the next days.

Meanwhile, foreign correspondents reported that German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble was also negative to the idea on Tsipras’s request for an EU Summit meeting.
